Once the primary form of internal written communication, memorandums have declined in use since the introduction of email and other forms of electronic messaging; however, being able to write clear memos certainly can serve you well in writing internal business emails, as they often serve the same purpose.
RE: HAARP - High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program
I was asked to research the importance, issues, and potential dangers associated with the HAARP. The HAARP is short for High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program. The HAARP is the largest of facilities that specialize on developing ionosphere technologies and studies the auroras and ionosphere of the Earth (Sweeney, 2013).
- Some conspiracy theorists believe that HAARP is the reason for many earthquakes, tsunamis, and other cataclysms (Smith, 2004);
- The basic goal of HAARP is scientific investigations and studies related to ionosphere, the part of atmosphere, by simply heating it up (High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP), 2011);
- Facility of HAARP uses 180 high antennas in Alaska. These antennas are powered by six diesel engines. The engines generate the required 3.2 MW of power. (Valihura, 2013).
Background and Objectives of the HAARP Project
The work on HAARP Project started in 1993 in Alaska where the research station was established.
The interest in rocket and nuclear sciences has arisen after the end of the World War II. These two related fields of knowledge were developing simultaneously between 1945 and 1963. This time stood out and became associated with a wide variety of tests in the atmosphere and trial explosions above and below the surface of the Earth.
Objectives of HAARP are:
- To broaden theoretical and practical knowledge (Kennedy et al, 2004);
- To designate the relation between radio waves in the ionosphere;
- To depict subsequent effects on communications, radar, and navigation systems;
- To involve the space that spans from 60 miles out to tens of thousand miles;
- To analyze ionosphere and research the possibility for making ionospheric weapons.
The most outstanding instrument is IRI, which stands for Ionospheric Reserch Instrument. IRI is a broadcaster of radio frequency that has high power working in the high frequency (HF) band. IRI’s aim was to stir up a definite ionospheric area. Other instruments, such as a very high frequency and ultra-high frequency radar, a fluxgate and induction magnetometers, were used to study the arising processes arising in that excited area (High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) Project, 2010).
History of HAARP
The first attempts to create a massive project that would relate to investigation of nature and aim to develop particular theories about atmosphere date back to 1950’s. These attempts were a result of hydrogen bomb tests. The negative side of such research was that particular parts of ionosphere were destroyed and their recovery may last for weeks or even years. There was another consequence of tests named EMP (Electro Magnetic Pulse). It meant that during investigations, scientists found some emissions of small parts that moved with high speed. Little later it became known that the stream of those particles could destroy the technique. Scientists had to create special equipment to resist that phenomenon. For that purposes, the technique called circular polarization was used. The essence of it is to generate low frequency radio waves. Such technique would direct the pave paws above (How HAARP fits the model of Columbia's destruction, 2004).
The idea of HAARP Project first came up during the times of World War II and the Cold War (Bertell, 2013). That became a way for researchers to study ionosphere by blowing it with radio frequency emissions. All physics scientists requested Pentagon to build a row of antennas to increase people’s knowledge. Another important aspect of HAARP Project was that it also could help the USA resist the USSR. So, Pentagon because interested in the idea (Shachtman, 2013).
In early 1990s, the project was brought to life and the first station was built. That was the time when scientists began their research.
Dangers Associated with HAARP
Whether HAARP really has negative consequences is still a question. Conspiracy theorists are prone to think that this is the only reason why natural cataclysms happen. Let us look at the arguments they make.
Earthquake named Boing Boing took place few years ago. The destructive earthquake that occurred in Haiti is thought to be caused by warming rays emitted by High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program Station. However, eventually that was the one of ideas about earthquake’s origin by conspiracy theorists. Even now, it is difficult to speak about the plausibility of such statements. Also, it is hard to evaluate how accurate people were while studying the facts of using the station. It should be said that such projects of the government are always centers of attention of certain interested people. Some scientists in Vanazuela added HAARP Project to their list of possible ways in which the US could have caused the earthquake in Haiti (HAARP and Conspiracy Theories, 2010).
Military forces of HAARP tell that this is not the only one ionospheric heater in the world. There are far smaller ones that are currently functioning in Puerto Rico, Norway, and countries of the former Soviet Union (HAARP and Conspiracy Theories, 2010).
In Alaska, there many antennas named PAVE PAWS. They are the largest established radars of the US. They use one million watts of power. That would be enough to disable TVs, radios, mobile phones, any other communications across a 250-mile range. So, what is the result of the work of this massive project?
The most prominent scientific studies of HAARP include:
- Scientific studies are involved in generating a very low frequency radio waves. These waves are generated by antennas, while scientists support the functioning of the latter;
- Another thing that scientists are engaged in is production of weak fluorescent fire in the process of HAARP work;
- Providing low frequency waves that span for 0.1 Hz range, which are not to be produced any other way;
- Interacting of waves with Van Allen radiation belt particles. Then, remote interaction of very low frequency waves with heated ionosphere takes place.
Speaking about the dangers or any life threats as well as the reasoning of nature cataclysms, it would not be enough to only establish radars that somehow heat atmosphere of the Earth. Yes, these machines are capable of producing up to 3.6 megawatts of power. The amount of energy that HAARP can consume can only be real with the huge energy of nature. Umran Inan, a professor at Stanford university, states that the power and energy of the station can be stopped by a single lightning strike, so it is not as powerful as the nature is (Rembert, 1997).
There exist many rumors that the power of HAARP station is so big than it can cause the movement of tectonic plates or change the weather. Meanwhile, the HAARP has no power for it. The only thing it can do is excite the ionosphere, which would be a small part of the atmosphere above the place where antennas are established (Bertell, 2013).
Another conclusion that can be made is that fundamental laws of nature cannot be changed by the simple installation of HAARP or any other program. Congressmen can try to conceal their real purposes, and military officers can prepare some new weapons, but that cannot affect laws of physics (Rembert, 1997).
Therefore, since it has no power to change these laws, it cannot cause earthquakes, floods, storm, or any other cataclysms.
Though the common opinion is that HAARP is a kind of separate research, it is prolonged for 50 years of ruinous and cancerous programs to gain more knowledge about the atmosphere. HAARP is only a little part of numerous massive human studies that aim to control the nature and make it work for them (Bertell, 2013). Moreover, the union of HAARP Project with Spacelab makes a combination the collective energy of which would exceed that of any station in the world. Most likely, HAARP Project will be sold to the public (Bertell, 2013).
