The study was carried out to determine the relationship between leadership and personality. The authors chose this topic to try and understand the theory of traits better. The theory of traits had been discarded in the 20th century due to lack of a standard set of traits that needed to be examined, but the development of five main traits prompted revisiting the theory. The traits exhibited through the personality of an individual needed to be addressed further in relation to their leadership abilities. This rationale is valid and justifiable.

The purpose of this article is to investigate the extent to which expert and leader characteristics converge, if at all. The author provides important background information and uses the currently available data to conduct the study and fill the knowledge gaps. The relationship between leadership and human resource management is vital, and its importance has further increased in recent years.

Literature Review

The literature review is organized in sections that evaluate the early research that left gaps that the current research seeks to address. Once the five traits are identified, the literature review evaluates the known aspects of each of these features individually. The main themes in the literature review focus on the correlation between the traits in the experiment and leadership. The review also addresses the possible impediments to successful research, mainly the methods that could facilitate bias. The most prominent author whose work has been used is Judge.

The author divided the literature review into three main categories. At the beginning, he provides a broad classification of theories of leadership. Then he narrows down to the area of the current study, first elaborating on expertise, and then combining the traits theory and expertise. Finally, he connects the theory and leadership. Throughout the literature review section, the author has not had a dominant author whose work has been heavily relied upon, but there were more references from Germain than for any other author.

What group(s) is/are being studied?

The research studied 178 students. 80 of them were studying MBA and were pursuing their degrees in leadership and personal development course, while the other 98 students were undergraduates who were studying a course in introduction to management. All participants were in discussion groups that did not have leaders.

The study heavily relied on the literature and not on an individual experiment. Most of the studies consulted were those that evaluated human resource department settings.

Limitations

What are the limitations of the study? Why can it only encompass so much?

The ratings of the individuals and reports on their personal traits were performed by friends and people who knew the participants well. First, more research to determine the effects of the observer should be carried out. Second, the research used three behaviors to assess the relationship between leadership and personality, yet the behaviors are loaded together in a single higher order factor. Third, the study on leadership was based on the perceptions of group members. Finally, the study was not causal.

First, one of the biggest limitations was the fact that the trait theory cannot be adequately predicted. Second, the theory acknowledges that studies based on personalities often give conflicting results. It also raises the issue of the impact of an individuals personality on their leadership abilities. This makes it difficult to adequately determine the extent of effects of these attributes using scientific means.

Results/ Conclusions

What did the author find through the study? Was the original question answered?

The results showed that people who assessed themselves regarded themselves as leaders more than other people considered them to be. The authors discussed the questions that the study sought to answer, they evaluated most of the results, and, finally, they determined the answers. However, the study opened up a few areas that further research should cover to ensure that the information gaps are reduced.

The results adequately answered the questions that the study was set up to determine. However, the author proposed to carry out further studies in several areas of the theory.
