Managing a Diverse Workforce
Every day our society becomes more culturally diverse. As a result of it, the workforce becomes a group of people of different genders, ethnic groups, religions, education, and languages among many others. Management of a diverse workforce entails handling and treating all employees equally and providing necessary accommodation. A diverse workforce in an organization requires fair treatment and respect, and discrimination of any kind should be avoided. Employees and management are brought together into a cohesive and productive unit. (Barak, 2010)
The topic can be classified as a practice. This is because some years ago, diversity was viewed as a financial liability rather than an investment. However, presently, organizations are recognizing the need for immediate action and are ready to spend on managing diversity in workplaces. It is a practice that is being adopted by organizations in order to survive. Advances in many areas, such as communication technology, have made the marketplace a more global concept. In order to survive, organizations are adopting this new culture (Herzog, 2013)
The major aspect that is essential for understanding this topic includes people`s perception. This is about how people perceive others rather than themselves. It is important to understand that different people view others differently. Also, there is a need to be able to categorize the factors that differentiate people. Moreover, it is important to understand the effect of diversity on an organization. This will help in understanding the differences that diversity brings to an organization. Management of an organization is also very important. It is pivotal to understand how management functions and how it will respond to innovations. Having a good understanding of management, one will be able to know how this idea will be interpreted and implemented.
Ceta Ramkhalawansingh is a long-time activist in Canada. She immigrated to Canada from Trinidad and Tobago in 1967. At the time, the non-white population in Canada was less than 20 percent. Forty-four years later, 47 percent of the population belonged to a visible minority. Ceta Ramkhalawansingh changed the way the country worked and policies that made this possible. She has been regarded by some people as Miss Diversity because of her role in changing the situation that was initially there. Weldon Rogue is another long-time civil rights activist. He has contributed a lot to managing a diverse workforce. At one time he was the only black executive in the company he worked and this gave him a really hard time. He viewed this issue on different echelons as he continued to work. Today changes can be observed because of what he did. A diverse workforce had faced challenges in South Africa during the apartheid period. It was not ready to be accepted. This is because some people were regarded as superior (Javat, 2013).
In the late 20th century, diversity was not given much attention. It was viewed as a financial liability rather than an investment. Today companies and organizations have embraced this as part of their culture. At the beginning of the 21st century, there were a number of changes in organizations trying to adopt the management of a diverse workforce. Most of the events in the sphere happened during the 20th century in most countries in the world. Presently, organizations have adopted this practice in order to survive.
Most international companies have a policy on workforce diversity. Most of these organizations can be found on every continent. Some local organizations within some countries are also practicing this culture. Some of the organizations that are associated with this practice include Google, IBM, Hershey, and Randstad in Canada. These companies have adopted management of a diverse workforce. They realized that without proper planning of workforce diversity, they may not succeed in the global market (Hershey, 2013).
Some of the terms that can be used include:
Treatment of employees
Relationship between society and workplaces
It does not matter where you come from! We are all equal
Together we can make it
Knowledge on the management of a diverse workforce should be acquired by individuals. This will enable them to practice it in their organizations. They may also share this knowledge with others. The management of an organization can really benefit from this knowledge. They will understand the benefits and opportunities that are available. They should realize that workforce diversity will improve teamwork and lead to a greater creativity and a wide market. Respect for employees will be there and treatment will always be fair to all employees. However, individuals implementing this culture in their organizations might face a lot of challenges.
One of the limitations that may be associated with implementing this culture is lack of awareness in organizations. Understanding the message is also very important. There may be cases where people or organizations do not comprehend the importance of the message. Awareness campaigns are also pivotal. They are usually initiated to make sure that the message is received by the relevant organization or group of people. They provide people with relevant information. Also, the subject may not be taken very seriously by involved parties. Insufficient information arises in cases where people are not aware that certain issues exist. There are certain conditions that may prevent organizations from making changes (Lawrence, 2013).
Most of the companies that have policies on workforce diversity have been effective both locally and internationally. This information can be used by organizations that want to change their operation, enhance creativity, and create a high morale environment for employees. The knowledge of this message will be beneficial in workplaces where employees will be treated equally and fairly. The organizations performance will be significantly improved if this practice is implemented. This is because there will be teamwork among its members.
A diverse workforce is very important in any organization. This is because organizations are aiming to operate on a global market and gain recognition. For this to happen, they will have to be well acquainted with this practice. The market is favorable for those that are willing to act upon receiving the message (Harris & Canas, 2010).
